It had been a while since Rose had seen her dear friend and client, Fran. She was in town visiting with her poodle, Chanel, and they were happy to see each other. But Fran looked concerned. Rose listened to her good friend about an unpleasant discovery she made in her new neighborhood. In the meantime, Chanel jumped happily at the opportunity to hang with her BFF, Kit.

"Hello, Rose. It's so nice to see you and Kit again, cherie, and to be in this sanctuary for the animals. You do such beautiful things here for them. I wish other people cared for the animals as much as you do."

"Oh, thank you, Fran. Well, we're not a sanctuary, but how nice of you to say. I know what you mean, though, and we do try our best for the animals here at Wild in the City. What's going on? Tell me about your new place."

"Oh, Chanel and I adore our new country home. But we have discovered something not so nice. Oof, I don't want to think about it, mon Dieu. How can I say this? There is a place not far from us where they keep the mama dogs in tiny cages to make lots of puppies. Oh la la, the puppies are no good."

"Oh no, puppy mill? And practically in your backyard. Oh, I'm so sorry, Fran. It's shameful what these places do to animals. It's the laws that have to change, and people should stop getting their pets from places like that. Unfortunately, many don't know what goes on in those places. And sadly, some don't care to know."

"But Rose, I don't want to see this anymore. And you know it's not good for Chanel as well."

"Oof, you could hear the puppies crying. Oh, no, no, no, no. We are thinking of moving again. Rose, it is horrible. What can we do?"

"I know, it's heartbreaking to see and difficult to deal with. But for now, the best way to tackle this is to organize yourself with the other neighbors and get in touch with the authorities, like animal control, for example."

"This is not good. I hope there is a way to make it stop. I will try as you say, Rose. Merci beaucoup, my good friend."

"I'll look up who else you can contact for you. I'm really glad you told me about this. And don't worry, Fran. I'll help you. Come, I'll treat you to lunch while Chanel plays with Kit a while."

As the ladies discussed the puppy mill over lunch, Fran felt more at ease and trusted Rose and her plan. While back at the yard, Chanel and Kit were bubbling over with excitement to see each other. But soon Chanel, too, shared about the awful discovery of the puppy mill with Kit.

"Chanel, good to see you, you old scruffy gal, you. Are you letting your hair grow out? What have you been up to? I want to hear everything you've been doing."

"Hi, kid. No, Mom's taking me to the groomer for a haircut later on. And just a haircut. Well, we go on long walks and hikes a lot, and I really like that. But Mom and I discovered a secret in the woods."

"Ooh, sounds interesting. I love secrets. What did you find?"

"It's not a fun kind of secret, Kit. Mom's pretty upset about it. We found a dog prison where they keep dogs in tiny cages with lots of puppies crying all the time. That's why we came in today. Mom wanted to talk to Rose about it."

"Oh, goodness. How horrible. I bet I know what that is. It's a place where they make mama dogs have lots of puppies so they can sell them. I know. Because I was born in a place like that. You're lucky if you get rescued, and the memories are so hard to get over. I was one of the lucky ones, though."

"So sorry for you, Kit. I would be so afraid. I guess I'm a very lucky dog. Mom and I don't like to see those doggies locked up, dirty, hurting, and with no love or a soft bed to sleep on. It's so sad. What can we do, Kit?"

"Rose says some people never learn right from wrong, and it's up to us to teach them. She always knows what to do and is very helpful. Don't worry, Chanel. I'm sure they'll come up with a plan."

"Sure, Kit, I trust you and Rose. Hey, you seen any blingy, puppy, purple-haired, sniffling girly-girls like I used to be here lately?"

"Not much for now, anyway, but I have a new friend, a cat named Scat. He is so funny. He tells me all these great stories about his cat friends. Come on, I'll show you where we meet up. Maybe he's there now."

Kit knew Rose would help Fran find a way to save the dogs from the puppy mill. Although it was an unpleasant memory for Kit, she wanted Chanel to feel reassured. And so, with lots of catching up to do, the furry twosome went off to play, happily wagging their tails.
