It was a busy morning at Wild in the City Doggie Day Care and Rose was trying to accomodated two of her regular and fastidious customers, Mrs. Stern an Mr. OverDone. They were the parents of two of the West Side Bunch, the group of dogs who usually came on the same day. Although she had a full house, she managed to fit them in the schedule.
“I see, Mrs. Stern. You're concerned Lucinda has a dog show coming up and you want her fresh before she starts training. Okay, and you want to keep her away from the pack of dogs she always hangs out with. Is that correct?
"Yes, but let me be more specific. I want to make sure Lucinda will be in an area all by herself. I have a funny suspicion she's been munching on food that doesn't belong to her. Where could she have picked up that nasty habit of overeating? I'm very concerned she's put on a couple of pounds, and that just won't do for the dog show"
"I'm sorry, I don't know how that could have happened, although she has been on break from training and maybe put on a few. But I will look into it for sure, Mrs. Stern.
"We always say a well-fed dog is a happy dog."
"Well, I can see the lack of discipline in some dogs.” The apple doesn't fall far. I hope I've made myself clear, Rose. Good day.”
Of course, Mrs. Stern. Good day. Oh, before I forget, we have some rescued puppies. Please spread the word around. Mr. Overdone, how can I help you today"
"Did she just insult me? Oh, whatever. Funny that woman is here at the same time I am, because I am worried that her dog might be aggressive toward my Hercules. He seemed a bit more jittery the last time he came home, and I was thinking of increasing his medication."
“Oh, no, Mr. Overdone. No need to do that. The dogs are well supervised and they may get at each other a bit, but that's normal. And, well, medicating your pet isn't always the best thing to do. Hercules loves being around the other dogs. It's the best and most natural thing for him to do. And we always keep an eye on him and all the dogs, rest assured.”
“Well, all right. Let's see how it works out for the next couple of visits. But if he shows any sign of stress...”
He'll be fine, and Lucinda will be in an area by herself, so no worries. Have a great day, Mr. Overdone.”
It had been a rough morning for Rose, and now she felt uneasy putting Lucinda in an enclosed area by herself. The poor girl immediately started howling, which brought Kit running to see what was wrong.
“Awoooo, Someone help me! Get me out of this prison! I can't take it anymore! I think I'm going to faint, Help me!
“Lucinda! Goodness! What are you doing there? I don't think I can get you out Oh, you poor dear Tell me, what happened and why are you here today?
I can't take this anymore I don't want to do any more dog shows, that's why I'm in here Because according to Mrs. Stern, and I refuse to call her mum anymore, I have been nibbling on extra food No, no, Lucinda, you've put on weight and that won't do for the dog show, she tells me. Oh, I could barf.
"I'm so sorry, Lucinda Just take a deep breath. I'm...umm so, how long have you been doing dog shows? I'd be curious to know what you do at those shows.
"No, you don't want to know. It's a bunch of poking around, how thick are your whiskers, the shape of your head, your weight, your legs? Oh, I don't want to talk about it. I just want to get out of here, Kit. Please!
Uh, let's see. Why don't I bring the other guys and we can keep you company... and Rose will get someone to walk you soon that should help a bit. And I'm thinking Rose can be very influential when she talks to people. I'll bet your mom will come around before you know it.”
"I doubt that, but here's hoping. Well, look whose coming now"
At that moment Hercules comes running over to Kit and Lucinda. He had his blanket between his teeth growling and dragging it at the same time.
"Wow, take it easy there Hercules. Goodness looks like you got some stuff going on too! What's up little guy?
"You're asking me? That's the problem, I never know, I just feel I'm out of control sometimes, ruff. I can't remember what it feels like to be the real me. But, why do I do that?
"Awww, I can't imagine how that must feel. Hmm, maybe it's those pills you take. Well, this is the first time I see you more active than usual and that's a good thing"
"Really, I just felt this impulse and went for it. I know it's unusual for me, because I'm always being carried around and being doted on, but in a way it was invigorating, ruff, yeah it really was, ruff, ruff
"Hurray Hercules and I would encourage you to get more exercise and enjoy the beauty of nature we have here. Rose says there's nothing better than drinking up nature. So go for it."
Kit had put both Lucinda and Hercules at ease. But she was eager to get at the root of the problem. She knew Rose's heart, trusted her and hoped she would come up with a solution...soon!
