Kit had stepped out with Rose to bring in some of the dogs that had been out earlier. She was worried about Scat, knowing he lived on the streets and was perhaps cold or hungry, and went over to his favorite spot to see if he was around. Kit looked up the tree and in the bushes and didn't see him, but suddenly her eyes caught the tip of a wagging tail, and she called out to him.
“Scat! Oh, I've been thinking about you. Goodness, it's so cold now. Do you have a warm place to stay? And what about food? How are you going to get any food to eat in this weather?”
Hey, you looking for me?
“Well, I must say that's quite nice, Kit. More questions, huh? Well, not to worry. I'll tell you one of my secrets where I go to sleep when it's cold like this.”
“You know, the abandoned house a few blocks away. Uh-huh.”
The one that's all boarded up?
“Oh, you mean that's where you sleep? But how do you get inside? Ah, that's another cat specialty. You see, I can make myself real small and squeeze into tiny holes. Then I move about guiding myself with my whiskers. And voila, a warm bed awaits me between the padding of the walls in the house. Oh, that is so neat. I could never do that.”
Rose says I have a sharp nose for sniffing out important things.
“Yep. But wait. How do your whiskers guide you? Well, it's like they're antennas. I mean, they are long for a reason, you know. And the slightest touch lets me know where I'm going.”
They also help me to balance myself when I jump.
“Boy, you sure do ask a lot of questions.”
“Oh, don't be like that. I want to know everything about cats. We don't have any here yet. I hope Rose will take some in soon, and then we'll have more cat friends. I'm not so sure about that. We felines like our space. You sure do have a lot to learn about cats. See, that's why I want to know more about you. But you must be hungry.”
“I know. Why don't you come with me? And Rose will get you something to eat. Oh, no. You're trying to get me to give up my freedom again. You know, I wouldn't have any whiskers if I was still living with my former humans.”
They used to cut them. That is a big no-no.
“Because I would lose my cat powers temporarily. Not good. I'm out of here. See ya.”
Hey, where you going?
“Come back. I'm sorry, Scat. Please come back.”
“I won't mention Rose again. Promise.”
Kit runs after Scat, but he has jumped over the fence and is gone in a flash. She sits for a while, sniffing the scent in the air, trying to figure it out, and thinking about how to get Scat a home, a forever home.
