It was early evening after most of the dogs had been picked up by their parents. Kit sat under a tree, weighing the events of the week and thinking about the dogs from the puppy mill. She was startled by what she saw. There was Scat coming toward her with another cat. She could hardly believe her eyes.
"Hey, Kit! Why the look on your face, huh? Yeah, I thought I'd bring along another cat you could meet. This is Sonia Pandora del Fuego. She's my friend. Sometimes."
"Goodness, two cats! I am so pleased to meet you, Sonia Pandora del Fuego. And your name is beautiful, but why is it so long?"
"Haven't you ever heard the poem by T. S. Eliot? Hey, Sonia, Kit likes to ask a lot of questions. She's learning all about cats. She's cool, though."
Just as Kit was about to approach Sonia, the cat let out a couple of hisses, arched her back, and disappeared, leaving Kit alarmed and confused.
"Whoa! Yikes! Uh, what is—uh, where'd she go? Did I do something wrong?"
"That nutty cat! I told her not to freak out. Hey, I'm sorry, Kit. She hasn't been socialized with dogs that much yet. She's also been through a lot, poor girl."
"Uh, I have to admit it was kind of scary. Ooh, those nails, teeth, and spiky fur! Yikes! I am sorry she's gone, though. Why did she leave like that?"
"Well, she's always been feisty, even when she was living in this store basement where she gave birth. One day, a lady took her home. Then both her kittens died months apart. Sonia got depressed. Things freaked her out, and she's been really strange ever since."
"Oh, that's heartbreaking. Poor Sonia. It must be so sad losing your kids."
"Sometimes she would walk around the house carrying a furry toy in her mouth, crying like she was missing her babies."
"Oh, terrible! But couldn't she have had more babies?"
"Not a good idea with humans. Besides, she got fixed. You do know about that, Kit, don't you?"
"I most certainly do. But I wasn't sure about cats. How did Sonia end up outside, though?"
"Well, you see, she also got into horrible scraps with the other cats the lady had and picked on one male in particular. The woman couldn't deal with it and got rid of her. So Miss Pandora del Fuego, like many of us, became a survivor on the streets."
"Goodness, nobody's perfect. We may have physical or emotional problems, but a parent should be able to help. Rose says, if you're gonna take in a pet, you're in it for life and must be responsible for them no matter what."
"Yeah, well, some humans just can't deal with it. Us, whatever. Anyway, you've got to forgive Sonia. She don't know dogs, and that's why I brought her here. She's probably hiding around here, the little sneak."
"Well, pets are your family, and that's that. Oh, Scat. I'd love to meet Sonia Pandora del Fuego again, even if she's feisty, and maybe try to help her. Oh, and you must tell me about this T. S. Eliot, too."
"Ah, right, Kit. Well, see you around sometime, and hopefully with Sonia Pandora del Fuego and T. S. Eliot."
Kit was sorry she missed an opportunity to meet Sonia, another cat. But more than anything, she was touched by her story and was determined to help her get a new home with someone who would care for her forever.
