Rose meets with a new client, Officer Brusky, in her office. He’s a hardliner, an insensitive cop with a sour face and attitude.
“Of course, Officer Brusky. We'll make sure Maximilian stays in an area where he can be by himself. We have lots of space in our yard. How long do you plan to keep him here?”
“I don't know. I am losing my patience with the pooch. What kind of a police dog walks around with his tail stuck between his legs? Max lost his mojo. The minute he sees a group of people, he turns into a wimp.”
“Well, maybe this is just what he needs. A little peace and quiet. It's good you brought him here. I'm sure he'll be just fine.”
“Well, I'm not so sure. He'd better shape up or out he goes.”
“Here's a good book you might find useful. You know, you get more bees with honey.”
“Yes, we'll see.”
Officer Brusky leaves Maximilian, a big gloomy German Shepherd canine, at the Wild in the City Doggy Daycare. Maximilian is huddled in a corner, shaking, looking anxious, and talking to himself. Kit watches him a bit, approaches the new dog, and starts talking to him.
“Hi, my name is Kit. What's your name? Hey, are you okay?”
“Uh, hey, I'm Maximilian, Max for short. What do you mean, am I okay? Oh, boy, oh, boy, oh, boy. Sheesh, oh, boy.”
“I live here, and I notice you look worried. Do you want to talk about it? I don't mind listening. What's that big badge you have around your neck for?”
“I'm a police canine. This is my police badge. My partner and I work on the streets a lot, mostly in the subways and Times Square. Oh, boy, but he doesn't know I'm afraid of crowds. Crowds make me real nervous.”
“Oh, sorry to hear that. I can see you look stressed. Does it show that bad?”
“It's okay. You can relax here and in this corner any time you want. It only gets crowded here with dogs, so you'll be fine. And we can play whenever you want.”
“I think my partner's going to get a new canine and maybe give me away. I want to be a good police dog, but my partner just doesn't understand me.”
“Maybe he's never had a dog before. Sometimes people just don't get us dogs. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they just don't care. Rose will help him understand. You'll see. Come on. I'll show you around.”
Max kept coming to Wild in the City for the next two weeks. He continued to speak with Kit and gained confidence. A few days later, Kit saw Max standing next to Officer Brusky, getting ready to leave. He was standing tall, proud, and at attention. Officer Brusky was talking to Rose. Max walked over to Kit to say goodbye.
“Did you hear my partner tell Rose how proud he was of me?”
“I certainly did. And I see he's really proud of you. That's great.”
“Yes, Ed finally realized that I have feelings too. He's more sensitive and caring to my needs. And we're both working on my fear of crowds. I'm much better now. We are going back on the beat together.”
“I'm so glad you two have bonded. You are more than partners. You are buddies now. Come back anytime. So long.”
Maximilian and Officer Brusky formed a great team and sometimes worked in the vicinity of Wild in the City Doggy Daycare and occasionally would stop to visit.
